He knew exactly where the car was, he got himself out it....he wasn't making repeated dives to find or reach the car....

Don't forget that he returned with 2 men that night. After failing to remove her he told them not to say anything that night...he then swam back to where he was staying but was exhausted earlier fighting the current in the pond. If he was not a Kennedy...
