Actually, original thinking is common. For it to be truly useful and truly creative however, it also needs to be tethered to facts and evidence, and not float free in some dreamland denying reality. Otherwise it just remains in fantasy land.

I see this all the time in my work as entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to me. Most people are average, by definition. It's rare to find a mind that combines originality with reality. A mind that is informed and has energy and insight, and can see clearly without encumbrance of ideology. Such people are rare.

Uninformed free-floating original thinking, in contrast, is actually quite common (cold fusion! ice-age by 2020! my startup will make a billion in two years! ).

Such "originality" is quite useless. I see it all the time. MW falls into that camp.
