The benefit formula is very progressive, so the tax base does not need to be. If the taxable wage base is disconnected from the benefit wage base, people who don't (and never) liked SS will have yet one more reason to bash it. The system can be fixed relatively easily without introducing this disconnect.

I appreciate the response but the distribution of benefits is different from the taxes going in. It does ameliorate it somewhat but, in the interests of fairness, those taxes should be more progressive. You'll notice I'm not addressing the issue of political viability. But it's important to keep the fairness issue alive and well in conversations.

You know, as far as I am concerned, the last person I am going to indulge, is anyone who does not like social security, as I would consider them barbarians.
