So it obviously wasn't a hitch in the buyout. I think the longevity issue is based on real data - not that someone read it wrong.

You're conflating two things, Steve. It's one of the more frequent flaws with data to read so called "real" data wrong. In this case, the average longevity of children at birth is highly likely to be less than the average longevity of 65 years olds. Those who died before 65 are simply no longer in the data bank in the second set.
