Well, sort of. Here's what's happening in California. We are trying academy models- small schools within schools. We are basically an experimental group, and all the other classes become the "control". We can examine the scores of our students and compare them to the general population- and because the data is collected so specifically, it can be mined for information about all sub groups (socio-economically disadvantaged, ethnicity, disability, etc). There is always old school research going on all across the country- those education PhD's have to get their degrees somehow- and some of it is pretty relevant and helpful. You can use google scholar to look up any areas of current research you are interested in.
