Can someone explain the bid/ask size spread to me please?

I've always wondered what one could deduce, if anything,
from the bid/ask size spread. That is, currently my broker
displays for AWRE:

Bid: 11 Bid Size: 2700
Ask: 11 5/8 Ask Size: 1000

That's quite a spread but let's ignore that if it's not
important. Does this suggest the MM is willing to buy more
shares (to fill an order?)? How can I use this to my advantage?

If someone knows a good URL or maybe a book that explains
this well I'd appreciate the pointer.
