Asia Must Invest More in Information Technology, Grove Says

San Francisco, Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. Chairman
and Chief Executive Andrew Grove plans to tell a group of top
Asian officials that they need to increase investment in
information technology, as they risk a long-term economic slump
if they don't, the Wall Street Journal reported. An analysis by
Intel shows that Asian countries on average spend about 1
percent of their gross domestic product on computers and
telecommunications equipment, or one-third to one-half the rate
of some European nations and the U.S. Some Asia observers dispute
Grove, saying the key issue was the quality of investment in
information technology, not the amount, the paper reported.

Grove will deliver the keynote address at this week's Asia
Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vancouver, British
Columbia, where President Clinton and leaders from Asia and the
Pacific region will discuss trade and other economic issues.
