Am I mistakenly thinking IBM has been giving away s/w in order to gain more service business? (e.g. that it gives away Eclipse has made the Java IDE market completely collapsed.) But its roadmap clearly states they want to move more towards s/w. (more like Oracle??!)

Woohoo, first person who has directly experienced IBM backends. Could you tell us what kind of company/companies use the IBM SW/HW? If you don't want to identify concrete company and software, at least the field and capitalization of the companies involved would be interesting. Also what kind of SW/HW from IBM?
