This your paradox and not my dilemma , are you a Puritan ? Were they right as believers in demons, witchcraft & demonic possession in their fundamentalist intollerance ? These original rigid non-conformists did have a profound effect upon the American psyche & the harsh bigotry which was reknowned for persecution for any form of frivolous recreation . Perhaps that's why they executed the poor hapless Quakers that had the misfortune to fall into their midst and become martyrs for their beliefs ? Perhaps it was just Nature in the end & not "God" squeezing out of man these imposed structures of pious fantacism governing behaviors that lended itself to survival in those harsh early times ? So all is Nature in the end , what passed as grace & pious holiness & rigid theocracy of one time looks like well thought out ignorant barbarism in another . *How can we be both rigid Puritans with "extreme sexual repression" AND permissive?* I have a very strong feeling you would know the answer to that better than most , so be a good Puritan now & analyze your own psyche ....must be a real jungle in there & lets see if you can find Darwin staring back at you when you take a peek !<g A little less hypocrisy and a little more self knowledge can do wonders getting out from under the hypocritical cloak of Christian love .
