ASCEND: Analysts rank Ascend as number one in Frame Relay and ISDN

NOV 21, 1997, M2 Communications - New reports from Infonetics and
Vertical Systems confirm Ascend leads the worldwide frame relay market
for ISPs and carriers and that it is gaining market share in ATM

Infonetics Research, Inc., the market analyst group, has released a
study placing Ascend Communications as the worldwide market leader,
with 69 percent of the ISDN and 42 percent of the frame relay market,
among both regional and large (national and international) network
service providers. In addition, the report shows Ascend has achieved 23
percent market share of the worldwide Internet ATM market. This is
confirmed by a recent announcement from Vertical Systems Group, the US
based datacoms research organisation, which reported that, for the
second year running, Ascend is the leading International provider for
both carriers and ISPs. It also reported that Ascend is gaining market
share in ATM amongst carriers.

"The growth of the Internet and the increasing strategic importance
solutions in carrier and ISP backbones," said Rick Malone, principal
analyst for Vertical Systems Group. "To stay competitive, service
providers are looking for ways to expand their service offerings and
offer guaranteed service levels. These factors are fuelling the
expansion of the Frame Relay and ATM markets."

"Our focus is on providing carrier-class products for public network
backbones, and our continued leadership position in the Frame Relay
marketplace with both ISPs and carriers is the best barometer of how
well we are meeting their needs," said Daniel E. Smith, executive vice
president and general manager of Ascend's Core Systems Division. "These
numbers show that ISPs and carriers are responding enthusiastically to
our products and, in particular, our ability to solve one of the
toughest problems they have today - migrating from Frame Relay to ATM.
The increase in market share for ATM is a testament to service
provider's interest in the total Ascend WAN solution."

According to Vertical Systems Group 'ATM and Frame Relay Industry
Update' for 1997: "Ascend, with the B-STDX 8000/9000 platforms, is the
leading Carrier Switch provider. This is the second year in a row that
Ascend products have led the market. We project Ascend to capture 21.6
percent of the $913 million worldwide market in 1997. Ascend is also
the leading frame relay vendor in the Internet Service Provider switch
segment, holding an estimated 29.1 percent share of the worldwide
market for 1997. The company's B-STDX 8000 and 9000 products have been
installed in more than 20 ISP networks, including five of the six
largest ISPs."

Ascend has recently broadened its product offering for Frame Relay
and ATM, introducing the GX 550 smart core ATM Switch and adding
multiservice capabilities including Frame Relay and IP to its CBX 500
ATM Switch. The GX 550 is the first of its kind enabling service
providers to offer sophisticated ATM services directly from the core.
Similarly, the CBX 500 ATM Switch enables service providers to respond
quickly to market changes by making a broader range of services
available on a single platform.

At the same time, Ascend also introduced the Navis Family of network
management products, including NavisXtend applications, that among
other industry firsts, enables service providers to track and bill for
services over ATM networks. All of these products and capabilities are
designed to enable carriers and ISPs to develop new business services
and, at the same time, provide greater accountability and control over
these services.
