Sounds like the same thing. Though I think the VPN is also more often just a network for strictly internal use. But I have to admit, I don't really know. Anyone else?

Ah, you're not fully buzzword-compliant :-).

VPN refers to using a public network like the Internet to connect together different parts of an organization's internal network via the Internet (e.g. instead of a private, leased line between a company's Boston and San Jose offices, they use the Internet). In practice, this involves encrypting the data before it hits the Internet.
This can be a whole lot cheaper than running your own leased lines; on the other hand, you give up performance guarantees.

Your definition of an Extranet is about right, though.
