Yes contracting out for things such as respite. Every province in Canada has a slightly different approach to health care.

Community Care Services

Caregiver Relief/Respite Many people receiving home and community care services are assisted by non-professional caregivers, often a friend or family member. Respite care can give the caregiver temporary relief from the emotional and physical demands of caring for a friend or family member. It gives caregivers the opportunity to join in community activities, while renewing their energies so they may continue to provide quality care.

Respite may take the form of a service in the client's home. Or, the client may be admitted, on a short-term basis, to a residential care facility, hospice or other community care setting. Caregivers may also take a break while the client attends an adult day centre or is receiving home support services.
