Siemens

Greeting Geof,

Always interested to hear your take on events. Orctf seems to be continuing to leverage their considerable xdsl, dsp and silicon expertise to the max on many fronts at many levels in what appears to be a calculated, hardnosed and strategic understanding of the xdsl marketplace. Will be interesting to see how far they can go.

Could be an interesting 98 and 99 as the next generation silicon arrives, next generation fujitsu equipment is completed, further partnerships/ trials and deployments (?) are announced and significant revenues begin (maybe) to flow back to orctf.

>>I'm confused by your grin-I thought Siemens/Orckit for VDSL was a done deal some time ago. Has it come apart?<<

Did not mean to imply that there could be problems... You're probably just so far ahead of the rest of us that we're being lapped... <g>

Yes, agree the relationship for vdsl has probably been in the works for some time. Was really just trying to be prudent as implications (mucho +) of a Siemens relationship are rather significant.

Recently have been wondering whether this vdsl relationship might also be extended to adsl. Orctf's italtel relationship seems solid and significant. Would put Telecom Italia as leaning towards orckit. Italtel's other half, Siemens seems to have amati/coms tendencies (not counting adsl over isdn).

Now that amtx will probably be subsumed into ti, would think that the dynamic may change. Am not so sure that either wstl or coms will be able to offer siemens a similar adsl relationship...

Also would think that a lot may be riding on the ti's c6x. Sounds like their timetable has slipped into roughly the same timeframe (mid 98) as the fujitsu/orctf adsl II silicon.

On the face of it, seems it's a very powerful, very ambitious, first generation (never trialed) general-purpose ti dsp chip (set?) vs a specialized, 3rd (or 4th depending on who's counting) integrated adsl chip (a first) optimized in european trials.

Siemens is no doubt familiar with orctf's current adsl product. Time will tell how the c6x/ adsl II stack up, but near term, am inclined to think the adsl II may have an edge in performance, power consumption, and price.

Wouldn't rok/orctf adsl possibly conflict with fujitsu/orctf? Separate product niches? Is this a problem? In any case, orctf/rok "joint development" dsl certainly can't hurt on the cross licensing front. Thanks...

any and all thoughts appreciated when you have the time.

Best wishes
