I agree, nobody should cry over cutting the budget for $900 toilet seats and $700 hammers.

>> Defense is almost one quarter of the federal budget. Obviously they should be affected by budgetary concerns, but Republicans betray their base platform of less government and fiscal responsibility if they continue to pretend that Osama bin Laden is still alive.

It isn't about whether bin Laden is dead or alive; he was neutered as a threat years ago.

But I see no reason to demand cuts of non-defense spending while exempting defense from it. Hell, there is plenty of waste in defense that could be eliminated with a little effort.

What I don't think Rs should give on is taxes. We don't need a nickel more money to run the government. We need massive budget cuts to bring government spending under control. This discussion should never have even contained a component of tax increases.

Until you get serious about Medicare, SS, and state Medicaids, there is no hope for straightening out the budget problems. Any reasonable person looking at these programs would start with eliminating the waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid. The fraud in these programs is just ridiculous and nobody is even seriously looking at it.
