3Com Introduces U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem
U.S. Robotics Branded Modem Offers USB Capability, Symantec WinFax PRO 8.0, and Integrated Full-Duplex Speakerphone
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 1997--3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS - news) today announced the U.S. Robotics(R) 56K(1) Voice Faxmodem with x2(TM)technology.

The newest product in the 56K desktop modem line offers software upgradability, an integrated office-quality speakerphone, USB(2) (universal serial bus) connectivity and a full version of the world's number one selling communications software, WinFax PRO.

The U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem is the first USB capable modem. USB, the newest method for connecting a serial device to a desktop PC, allows users to easily hot-swap peripherals. The flexibility of USB will likely make it the standard peripheral connection in future computers. In fact, DataQuest, April 1997, estimates that USB penetration will reach 100 percent in 1998.

''The U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem brings advanced communications functionality to the small office and home office environment,'' said Neil Clemmons, vice president of marketing for the Personal Communications Division of 3Com. ''This product has the future built in with USB readiness and software upgradability. And, our core flash DSP technology will allow customers to easily upgrade to the forthcoming ITU-T 56K standard as well as future product enhancements.''

The faxmodem's integrated full-duplex speakerphone allows users to talk and listen at the same time, without the need for additional speakers. The product also allows users to answer incoming voice calls when the computer is turned off. The U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem provides the full fax and voice capabilities of the award winning Sportster(R) Voice product line, including Caller ID and distinctive ring (where available, special service required ).

In addition to the full suite of software bundled on the Connections(TM) CD-ROM, the U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem includes a full version of WinFax PRO 8.0 software, complete with TalkWorks voice mail software, a $99 value. This software will allow users to send group faxes, receive pager notification when a fax or voicemail message arrives, detect whether an incoming call is fax, data, or voice and create up to 100 separate voice mailboxes.

As with all 3Com(R) x2 products, owners of the U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem will receive a guaranteed free(3) upgrade to the forthcoming ITU-T standard for 56K technology (adoption expected in 1998). Through the more than 1180 ISPs who offer x2 service today, 3Com customers now have local access to x2 Internet services in more than 11,410 cities across all 50 states and 33 countries. The U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem is expected to begin shipping in December 1997 with an estimated street price of $249.

Carmine,

Yes, "...'98 down to $1.74(from $2.29) and this Q down to $0.09" is major.

But let me ask, don't you think the major sellers in the last two weeks knew this before it was published to the rest of us?

I content that this merely answers our questions about "what's going on?" as we watched it slip away on us.

I agree with Andrew, where else can we go but up?
