The reason why HP has a "clarification" regarding UNIX on its home page (along with a dig against Java but a surprising acknowledgment that NT is not ready for the enterprise (must have slipped by the MS censors) is that its had its head handed to it by Sun in the Unix server marketplace.

HP is outsourcing its chip production to Intel, its OS to Microsoft and its unclear what its unix strategy is and the perception is that it is decommitting to Unix. This is a dangerous position for a company who still makes its living on commercial unix servers - do you think that HP is scared to death that Microsoft will not have an OS which it can offer its existing base of Unix customers ready in time?
