And before that there was Moses & the Prophets they turned to at their gatherings and not denied this added a cohesiveness & tremendous social tribal bond especially with emphasis on the written preserved symbols that before had to be orally passed down .
One see's farther back to a more elemental "idea" of God first associated with "Thunder/Jahveh" and as interactions within the tribe & the world the stories become added on to as time passed & immortalized , embellished thru time .
They "evolved" ...

To the early generations of the Hebrew, MOSES was the ONE Law Giver. Along with Abraham & the prophets while other races & groups that grew & sustained themselves long enough did the same with evolving their own line of stories from simple into more complex . Gods were added or subtracted .prophets fell into & out of favor . And for all that what happened that this God for centuries foresaw and prepared his "children" for returning to that purified land but death destruction & expulsion & sold into slavery by the millions . Being God though he must have had a Plan B , which ofcourse men were quick to sieze on , for it was MAN all the time creating & fashioning & building upon these legacy stories & fictions .

Sounds more like Nature to me Pharisee , core beliefs in an afterlife or not and here we are once again in the grip of those same stories that do not unify , not even "Christians" ever found they could agree . Looking at the play of history the only conclusion is Nature & not God was ever at work here religion was a useful but fragile shell , much like a garden snail would wear offering some protections from the unknown, cohesiveness & some unity .

All very Darwinistic ...
