Emma Sullivan, high school student, refuses to apologize to Gov. after tweet

High school senior announced she would not write letter of apology, which is due on Monday

Emma Sullivan made national news after the Missouri Governor’s office complained about her Tweet.

A high schooler who found herself in hot water after writing a negative tweet about Kansas Governor Sam Brownback told the Associated Press on Sunday that she won't be apologizing. Emma Sullivan, a high school senior, tweeted "Just made mean comments at gov. brownback and told him he sucked, in person" after listening to the Republican governor speak.

She did not actually make any comments to him - but after his office received word of the tweet, they alerted Sullivan's high school. She was quickly summoned to the principal, who told her she must write a letter of apology - which is due on Monday.

The Twitter tiff made national news after Sullivan discussed the matter with local Kansas City media last week.

"I don't regret sending the tweet," she told the Kansas City Star. "It was harmless. It's not like I was really fired up about anything he said."

The governor's director of communications, Sherriene Jones-Sontag also seemed unfazed by the blowback to her office.

"That wasn't respectful," she told the newspaper. "In order to really have a constructive dialogue, there has to be mutual respect."

Over the weekend, Sullivan received a huge swell of support. Her Twitter account grew from a few dozen followers (and updates about the movie 'Twilight') to more than 3200 followers as of Sunday night and a quote from Gandhi.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win," she wrote.
