My brother-in-law's Jack Russell Terrier got into a skunk and they had a devil of a time ridding him of the odor. I tried to help by looking up recipes for that and phoning them over. Later I joined my wife at her mother's place, which is adjacent to BIL's and a few blocks away from an aunt's. We were visiting the aunt when I decided to walk home in the dark. About half way home I saw that very same skunk about ten feet away, about to cross the sidewalk I was on. I stopped in my tracks and slowly backed up, and the skunk crossed and ran under some bushes. Whew!
