I am definately not a telecommunications expert. All the information that I share is whatever I can get my hands on to read. As for the 2400 baud rate, that is correct for the current system. Because this systems only intended uses are voice, page or fax I am guessing that 2400, which would be woefully inadequate for the internet, is plenty fast enough for the intended uses. However, there is a recent WSJ article (cited in an earlier post) that discusses the recent applications by both I* and G* with the FCC for dramatically upgraded systems. Both I* and G* will begin launches for these systems in the year 2000. The main improvements will be in capacity, but I do remember some mention of improvements in speed also. If you need further details I may be able to locate where I posted it.
