LU doing DVD encoding. How do they do this at 4Mbps............................. Lucent Technologies produces DVD for NAB '97 using the Lucent MPEG-2 encoding system FOR RELEASE: MONDAY, APRIL 07, 1997 LAS VEGAS, NV - NAB '97 BOOTH #S2856 -- Lucent Technologies has produced one of the first corporate promotional digital video disks (DVD), entitled "Making More Out of Time," for the NAB '97 show in Las Vegas. The disk, which was encoded with the Lucent MPEG-2 Digital Video System, highlights the professional studio quality compression of the Lucent MPEG-2 encoder through value-added footage from Live Entertainment's film "The Arrival;" Houghton-Mifflin Interactive's "Curious George" CD-ROMs, and from LMK Images' "Chimere," a video that captures the intensity of the equestrian troupe Zingaro. Lucent has ordered a customized 5,000-copy run through Warner Media Services for "Making More Out of Time." "Making More Out of Time" captures a glimpse of Lucent's heritage in the broadcast business through archival footage culled from Lucent promotional films. The footage highlights such significant Lucent innovations as the Vitaphone (the first sound-for-picture system); the transistor; the communications satellite, and the charge-coupled-device (CCD). The fifty-minute DVD will be demonstrated on a video wall at the Lucent booth - #S2856 - at the Multimedia World Expo at NAB '97 - in the Sands Convention Center. The video wall, produced by Jon Stolzberg of Inter World Media, uses a control system provided by Crestron Electronics, Inc. "Film studios who are interested in producing DVDs for the home market, as well as CD-ROM publishers intent on migrating their product to DVD-ROM, require the kind of picture quality that the Lucent MPEG-2 encoder delivers," said Arthur Salvadore, business development manager for Lucent Technologies' Advanced Technologies Group. "The DVD market is poised to explode, and Lucent is ready to provide MPEG-2 solutions for this growing industry." The Lucent MPEG-2 encoder offers professional 4:2:2 compression in a cost-effective package, providing image quality levels required for the migration path to DVD. Designed by Bell Labs, the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies, the Lucent MPEG-2 Digital Video System leverages Bell Labs' expertise in digital video development. MPEG (Motion Picture Expert Group)-2 is the de facto worldwide video compression standard for digital program delivery. An MPEG-2 encoder digitally compresses video and audio signals so that they can be transmitted using less network bandwidth. Using less bandwidth enables economical transmission, processing and storage of video for a number of applications, including distance learning, video-on-demand, and digital video broadcast services. Bell Labs, the research and development arm of Lucent, has been active in the development of the MPEG standard, and continues to provide solutions for future generations of MPEG codecs. Lucent's current MPEG-2 system, its second-generation product - which includes the EVA-100 encoder; QDEC-100 quad decoder; and NIM-100 Network Interface Module - offers professional studio-quality 4:2:2 compression. Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, consumer and business telephone systems and microelectronics components. Bell Labs is the research and development arm for the company.
