Mediaone is offering cable modem service here in MA and elsewhere. I think it's 39.95 / month after buying/installing modem. It's two way at 1.5M/sec down and 300K/up loads. No phone required. Figuring the cost of second line and ISP, this looks like a bargain.

The satellite service over the Direct PC is comparably priced, but they are charging .60 to .80 per MB of download, depending on hours and plan type. They are also only 400KB down load and require a phone. For me that would get to be pretty expensive. Pulling charts over the net runs my rate up to 1 to 2 MB per hour on downloads.

Then there's the SI posts, my word, that can really add up. :^)

They're laying fiber left and right here too, but this is the exception rather than the norm.

It's a fairly high density area inre population so is cost effective for Pacbell.
