Yes, most of Seattle is sea level or just a bit above....so that's probably why it happened.....funny thing though....I NEVER gave that a thought until it happened...and even then I just thought I was over tired.

We haven't gone to Rainier in a few years, and that's 14,000+ feet....didn't notice any problem then.....nor when we went to Mt St Helen's to the Johnston Center... We have a full set of stairs here at home, and I'm probably up and down them about 20 times a day.....but when I climbed the stairs the first time at their home, WOW, I really noticed ....Very strange feeling indeed.

The first full day we were there is when I noticed something wrong....It's not like me to not want to go shopping and looking around.....<ggg>

Hubby thinks I have a PhD in "shopping".....even though he knows I don't spend much money very often, certainly not on little trivia.....<ggg>

I got altitude sickness the first time I tried to summit Mt. Whitney.

I didn't acclimatize at all, which is likely a big part of the problem. I got hit pretty hard right around 13,000'. Serious headache compounded by uncontrollable vomiting. Only cure is to lose altitude fast. Ignoring altitude sickness symptoms can lead to HAPE and HACE (High Altitude Pulmonary/Cerebral Edema).....and death.

I don't go above 12,000' without spending a night or two at 10,000' before and I take diamox starting a couple of days before the hike.

My bout of altitude sickness was painful enough to make me very active in never getting it again.

In addition to the diamox, I recommend taking iron supplements for a couple of weeks before going above 12k.

"even the base camps up there are high"

Something like 18,000 feet, I believe.
