Robotics are very important for consistent manufacture, I believe. I recall a colleague saying that Rolls Royce bought some automatic transmissions from General Motors but they didn't like the tooling marks on some of the interior surfaces. They polished those off, but then the trannies would not work. Evidently the tooling marks were essential to the function.

Hand fitting isn't always best, except in artwork and such.
