Why are you singling out the iPhone? From the interview, handset manufacturers represent a very small part of CIQ's business, so that data does not appear to be going to Apple.

What I find more upsetting is the CYA half truths that attempt to reassure when they don't mean a damn thing. The likes of RIM, Microsoft, Google, and Nokia have all come out saying that they do not support Carrier IQ, but that doesn't mean Sprint doesn't put a CIQ client on the Arrive or the Nexus S before shipping. Apple was even worse-- Apple insists that they don't get any info unless you opt-in to diagnostics, but Apple's opt-out/opt-in policy has no bearing on whether AT&T can collect data surreptitiously from the iPhone's onboard CarrierIQ agent.
