It's only because people are uneducated that they don't accept global warming and evolution.

MORON ALERT!!

Message 27809235

In the above spew one of our resident VI's helps us to understand how he got his reputation for unmatched stupidity! Firstly, he conflates the objective reality that we live in where existence seems governed by certain fundamental laws and principles and very knowable phenomena..with the knowable but subjective claims of morality across cultures, groups, individuals--and (of course) across time. He appears utterly confused (and why are we not surprised!) that OPINION about what is liked or disliked, wanted or unwanted, helpful or hurtful, right or wrong changes over time and reflects subjective and contrived points of views.

He insists that the different opinions which exist in the world about how one ought to act have no worth or value without unanimity! For instance, Giordano Bruno could not accuse the Christians whom were murdering him by burning him alive of doing wrong....and these wonderful children of Yahweh, likewise, could not justify the cruelty and harm they did because relative opinions don't count!

Likewise, Bertrand Russell cannot complain about the problem of evil and try to justify his opinion with rational thought just as (say) Lot could not complain about the problem of evil after incest and impregnation of both his daughters because he was too sated to give a cogent opinion.

According to this VI, everything is just CHOOSE A SIDE and claim you are right and good and everyone else is EVIL!! What a primitive little gnat!

How do people get so STUPID!

Even a fifth grader can follow how moral "oughts" have changed through time--even within the same group! The tribes of Israel no longer consider genocide and the butchering of men women, and children...and the rape of the virgins to be virtuous. The Popes, the Congregation, the Christian South, and the Ancient world--who once gloried in the moral goodness of slavery--justified from a primitive book or from some other source of inspiration--now (and for the time being only) insist almost universally that hurting other people through slavery is wrong (hurting them in other ways is still ok).

Ought we to burn a "witch" in most modern opinion? NO! And only some VI living under a rock would claim that stoning to death a gentle soul who gathered firewood on a Sunday to keep his family warm or fed was a moral act. Yet all these atrocities were presumed to be commanded by a perfectly moral being as laws of morality! In reality they were laws of OBEDIENCE given by tribal leaders to keep their power and their influence in place.

Do not worship other gods (NOTHING to do with morality).

Don't draw me, paint me, or sculpt me (NOTHING to do with morality).

I get jealous as all Hell so don't look at another God or Goddess (NOTHING to do with morality).

Be careful how you say my name. Do not be irreverent. (NOTHING to do with morality).

Do not boil a baby goat in a mother's milk. (NOTHING to do with morality).

Remember Sunday or Saturday or Friday--or whatever (NOTHING to do with morality).

Is all 'morality' a matter of opinion? Of course it is. Do we agree nowadays with the opinion of Pope Pius 6 that human rights is a monstrosity? Most of us do not. Some still do. Do we agree with Pope Gregory that freedom of religion is insane? Most of us do not. Some (fanatics and some Village Idiots) still do. Do we believe that the intolerance and racial hatred depicted in the bible was a good moral value? Most of us do not. Some still do.

Our opinions have changed, but in many ways humans can certainly agree on moral behaviour within our own species. Many humans believe it is ok to kill other species (for under what conditions consult the various cultures, groups, and individuals. And be Kosher about it)! But now that legislation and revolutions and great thinkers and leaders have given all humans (irrespective of color or race) a fundamental set of rights, we share an increasingly agreeable set of opinions regarding notions of right and wrong. Because the truth of the matter is that people are helped and hurt by fundamentally the same things so it is only a matter of being honest for people to reach suitable agreements on family, community, national, and international standards of conduct.

Only a matter of being honest. And when we are not honest with reality bad things often happen. Please supply your own examples...but don't cross at a red light and don't rape your neighbour. That would hurt--not only her...but perhaps thousands of people. And you cannot expect to hurt people and not be hurt back...
