The internet is not an extension of traditional retail. This is a different market segment (distribution channel) - like mail order, for example. Sears pulled the plug on its mail-order catalogue, but others thrive selling the same things. Success in one distribution channel doesn't guarantee success in another.

BKS' entry to the web is simply not successful; they may well decide to stick with their core business. They have a prime, highly visible website on AOL, yet AMZN is kicking their ass from out in left field. Sooner or later they may tire of having egg all over their face and retreat to more familiar turf, leaving internet commerce to those who understand it.
