Gold may be failing as a safe haven, but Apple stock seems to be fitting the bill, for today at least.

Apple shares are up 1.1%, which sadly places them among the 10 biggest winners in the otherwise weak S&P 500 today.

The company, which for a brief time earlier this year was the biggest US public company by market cap, is enjoying strong iPhone demand and a little analyst love this morning.

AT&T said yesterday that iPhone demand had helped it sell about 6 million smartphones in the first two months of the fourth quarter, meaning it was likely to shatter its record for quarterly smartphone sales of 6.1 million

That led UBS to raise estimates for iPhone sales in the quarter:

This morning we noted that with AT&T’s better than expected smartphone strength being driven in part by the iPhone, there was likely to be upside to our 28mn iPhone est for CY4Q. We believe that there is a general strength across the board for iPhone demand and are raising our CY4Q ests to 30mn from 28mn units.

We continue to believe that our estimates are conservative as these revised estimates are still below where expected build plans are. We conservatively leave our out quarter estimates though we believe China launches could drive upside.

Baird analysts did the same:

With AT&T seemingly positioned to sell 7 million+ iPhones, we believe the U.S. alone could generate 14 million+ iPhone sales this quarter.

AAPL revisions. Raising our CQ4 iPhone shipment estimate from 27.3 million to 31.2 million. We elected to lower our iPad shipment forecast slightly to reflect our semi team’s recent procurement checks, but are still raising EPS from $9.97 to $10.74 vs. consensus of $9.75.

Citi analysts didn’t do any raising, but they echoed AT&T’s message of strength in iPhone sales, after a fancy visit to Taiwain, la di da:

Consistent with AT&T’s pre-announcement yesterday of higher than expected iPhone activations in 4CQ11, our meetings in Taiwan suggest that Apple raised 4CQ11 iPhone orders to suppliers meaningfully just last week. The new iPhone build plan is meaningfully above the low-30’s million figure that we were hearing previously. Given such a significant order increase at this late stage in the quarter, it seems clear that Apple is headed for a meaningful upside surprise on iPhone shipments this quarter.

After EU, now US DOJ Investigating Apple Over eBook Antitrust Claims
JEFF GAMET

Apple is facing a Department of Justice investigation into possible antitrust violations related to ebook pricing at its iBookstore. Confirmation of the DOJ investigation followed a report that the European Commission was looking into similar allegations in Europe.

Like the EU investigation, is looking into whether Apple and book publishers worked together to artificially set ebook pricing.

“We are also investigating the electronic book industry, along with the European Commission and the states attorneys general,” Justice Department acting antitrust chief Sharis Pozen told the Wall Street Journal.

Word surfaced on Tuesday that the EU has launched an investigationinto ebook price fixing that includes Apple, Simon & Schuster, Harper Collins, Penguin, Hachette Livre and Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holzbrinck.

“The Commission will in particular investigate whether these publishing groups and Apple have engaged in illegal agreements or practices that would have the object or the effect of restricting competition in the EU or in the EEA,” the agency said.

Apple’s tie-in into the investigation involve deals that pushed an agency model where publishers can set book pricing instead of resellers, and agreements that block publishers from selling their titles for less through other ebook stores.

Apple has not commented on either investigation.

Twitter for Android Gets Design Overhaul to Bring User Interface and Experience Closer to Desktop
Twitter for Android Gets Design Overhaul to Bring User Interface and Experience Closer to Desktop
by Quentyn Kennemer on December 8th, 2011 at 1:58 pm

Twitter for Android has gotten yet another update. This one’s another overhaul in both design and functionality. Four tabs bring all that Twitter has to offer – Home, Connect, Discover and Me. Home is just your streaming timeline of incoming tweets.

Connect is where you can find not only your mentions, but notifications about new followers, retweets and direct messages. Discover is where you find the ever-so-popular trending topics, the search function and a place to get suggestions for new accounts to follow.

Finally, the Me tab is pretty much your profile. Update your photo, your information, see who you’re following and who’s following you, manage lists, privacy and more are all possible under this tab.

It really simplifies the mobile experience and it’s about as aesthetically pleasing as the Twitter application has ever been. You can find the update in the Android market (the web Market is not showing the update yet but it’s there).

BREAKING...Gmail and Contacts get better with Google+
Gmail and Contacts get better with Google+
12/08/2011 10:20:00 AM
googleblog.blogspot.com

We want to bring you a great experience across all Google products which, for Gmail and Contacts, means understanding what you care about and delivering it instantly. With that in mind, we’re introducing some new integrations with Google+ that we think will make Gmail and Contacts even better. If you use Google+, you can now grow your circles, filter emails and contacts by circles, keep all your contact information up-to-date automatically and share photos to Google+, all right from Gmail and Contacts.

Grow your circles from your email
Now when you open an email from someone on Google+, you can see the most recent post they’ve shared with you on the right-hand side of the conversation. If they’re not in your circles yet, it’s easy to add them straight from Gmail.

Find information from the people you care about most
Looking for the info on an upcoming family holiday gathering but can't remember who sent it? If you've spent time building your Google+ circles, you can now quickly use them to filter your mail, saving yourself from having to sift through that pile of daily deal emails and newsletters. You can see messages from all of your circles at once or from each individual circle. And if you want, you can show circle names on emails in your inbox. Contacts can also be filtered by circles, making it easier to view your social connections.

Keep your contact information up-to-date automatically
Manually entering contact information can be a huge time drain—so let your circles do it for you. If your contacts have a Google profile, their contact entry in Gmail will be updated with the profile information they’ve shared with you, including phone numbers, email addresses and more. If they change it in the future, you’ll get those updates automatically. You can also make sure the people you care about have your most up-to-date contact information by updating your own Google profile and sharing it.

Share effortlessly without leaving your inbox
Lots of great images are sent through email, but sharing those photos with friends on Google+ used to require downloading the image from Gmail and re-uploading to your profile. Not anymore: Now you can share photo attachments with one quick click. The image(s) will be uploaded to your Google+ photos and be viewable only to the circles that you choose to share with.

We’ll be rolling out all of these changes out over the next few days to Gmail, Gmail Contacts and the “standalone” version of Google Contacts at contacts.google.com. Please note that Google Apps users won’t see the Contacts updates quite yet, but we’re actively working to make them available.

All of these features (and the more to come) are the result of the great discussion that we had on Google+ with users in July. If you want to join in discussions like these, add the Gmail Google+ page to your circles. And if you haven't signed up for Google+ and would like to try these new features, visit this page to get started.
