That's exactly right, ggersh. I think some of these bankster-fraudster types look at the portfolios and accounts they control and think to themselves:

Okay, I got a few hundred million to play with here. With my keen inside knowledge of derivatives and swaps, I'm confident I can leverage that into several hundred million more in a few days and keep a few million for my nice handiwork, of course. If something goes wrong, I can do x, y, z to mitigate the damage, but in all probability nothing will go wrong before I can put original capital back next Tuesday. Worst case scenario, I get caught and go to a cushy prison for white collar criminals. It's not like they can kill me. Heck, like Madoff said, he actually feels relieved now that he is able to kick back and relax with no worries. That actually sounds pretty good! Besides, the risk-to-reward ratio is too good to pass up! I'll be okay. The risk is worth it! Time to roll!
