I know three women who are blue water sailors, which puts them way out ahead of me.

I like to be able to see the shore, which is one reason I liked boating in Stevens Passage around Juneau. The weather up there could get nasty, but I was very cautious and always picked my weather outbound. Weather inbound gets picked for you.

I never went out more than 35 miles. The biggest problem there was the 20 foot tides, which could hide rocks at low tide that had plenty of clearance at high tide. I hit one with my outdrive coming back one day and had to motor in on the kicker about ten miles.

On another trip I was coming back in very rough seas climbing up one side of the waves and throttling back to avoid pitch poling. When we got to the harbor we found out a boat under tow that swamped after we passed it, drowning at least one of the guys on it. They should have transferred to the tow boat.

A colleague lived on his sailboat in Juneau, and sometimes participated in a race around Admiralty Island. One year the race was spoiled when a wave tossed a body onto the deck of one of the racers.

You don't tug on Superman's Cape, you don't spit into the wind, and you don't mess around with mother nature.

I knew MS Smoothie had a sailboat, but only thought one

I think SHE would be captain and you a mere swabbie
