Residential systems can vary quite a bit depending on who you have for a contractor. A typical system should price out at about $4 a watt total today. The PV's in a residential system should end up being about 30 to 50% of end system cost.

I can build out a grid tied system (using my labor) for about $2 a watt today. Of course there is no profit for me at that price.

I just checked my favorite online site for panels. Prices have dropped almost 30% in just the last couple months:
