I didn't lose the rest of the winter, but I only played a few more weeks and just off and on. I was tired of being alone on the road and wanted to get home. I had left my mom's three cats alone with a sitter and it was winter. Only thing she worried about when she died. Who would take care of her cats and me being a dutiful son-lol. They were sure happy to see me back. When I played in new places I would explore the area on my bike. It was a little dangerous as I always had several thousand in cash, but didn't have any trouble. Still, I was pushing my luck. My younger daughter was just finishing up college at the U of Oregon and my other daughter in Portland was just getting started as her husband is a poor professor of physics at the local university. So I had my younger daughter self address a stack of envelopes and I would send 1/4 of my winnings each night to each kid. No check, I just put the cash in the mail and dropped it off. So each day when the kids went to the mailbox they didn't know if dad had won or lost that day and whether they would find cash (like a perpetual Christmas). I went back and forth resting in Eugene and Portland each time. My younger daughter had a bunch of nice poor friends and when I went through Eugene she would round them up and I would take them all to a fine restaurant and they could order whatever they wanted. HUndred dollar bills were just chips to me-lol. When I played in San Jose I kept a log and found I won 2/3rds of the time and lost 1/3 and my average winnings were larger then my loses; and I seldom won after 4 hours (where I got that idea). Another trick I used was when I got so far ahead, I would arbitrarily pick the time (never knew why that worked so well)counted my chips and if I lost 1/3 back I would quite. So if I had $600, if I went down to $400, I left, but if I pushed it up to $900 then I could lose $300 back. Also, I never lost more than 2 racks no matter how good the game. If I lost 2 racks I got up and left. This allowed me to let my winnings run if I was having a big night. My home club in san Jose was the victory club and Joes. One night I played all night and won and ungodly amount of money for me at the time. I still remember one of the floor men (Harvey) saying to another floor guy: "I told you the kid was good"--my proudest moment. I was only about 24. When I sit down to a game of limit poker, I feel like I am on my turf and am never afraid. I have won some prretty no limit big tourney's but know I am not a solid no limit player. PS: Helmuth once asked TJ Cloutier, when he was losing: what am I doing wrong, and cloutier told him: "you have to give those guys some respect that they can play some poker too"-lol
