Jawad Khaki's cloud startup Uhuru surfaces

Longtime Microsoft Windows executive Jawad Khaki is announcing a new cloud software company today.

Called Uhuru Software, the company is developing a bridge for Windows .NET developers and applications to use VMware's Cloud Foundry platform.

The self-funded company already has 10 employees at offices on Union Hill Road in Redmond.

The name is a Swahili word for freedom. Khaki said it was chosen because the software gives developers and technology managers the freedom to use the software of their choice.

"Developers should have the freedom to write in the language and the framework they prefer," he said.

Uhuru is working on a beta version of Uhuru.Net Services for Cloud Foundry, which will be shared as open-source software. The software should be released in the first half of 2012.

Khaki, 53, joined Microsoft in 1989 and left as Windows vice president in 2009. He briefly worked at Bellevue startup Atigeo last year, then started Uhuru with Jawaid Ekram, a software industry veteran who was formerly a Microsoft general manager responsible for global foundation data center services and Live Meeting services.
