Poland Wants Power Producers to Seek Shale Gas, Parkiet Reports
By Monika Rozlal - Dec 28, 2011 1:29 AM ET
bloomberg.com

Poland wants state-controlled energy companies to join forces in the search for shale gas, with the aim of starting extraction early in 2015 at the latest, Parkiet reported, citing an interview with Treasury Minister Mikolaj Budzanowski.

Budzanowski said PGE SA (PGE), the country’s No. 1 power company, Tauron Polska Energia SA (TPE), the second-biggest, Enea SA (ENA), the third-largest, and Energa SA should form a “national alliance” and play an active part in exploration, as they can use gas for energy generation, the newspaper reported.

Canadian firm assesses shale gas deposit in Poland
cbsnews.com

(AP) WARSAW, Poland — A spokeswoman says Canadian Talisman Energy is assessing the commercial potential of a shale gas deposit it has found in northeastern Poland.

Jadwiga Swiecicka said Thursday that a test well near the town of Braniewo has revealed the presence of gas but months of examining the samples are needed before it is clear if the deposit is sufficient for commercial use.

Earlier this month Exxon Mobil said the amounts of shale gas it found in two test wells would not justify commercial production.

Some 20 international companies are checking the potential of shale gas deposits in eastern and central Poland, believed to be among the largest in Europe.

Poland is seeking new sources of energy to cut its dependence on Russian imports.
