There is a sense of teamwork and pride that comes from properly executing various orchestrated movements. And that's a good first step towards bringing diverse personalities into a combat effective team. > Schools and businesses used to be strongly modeled on such military ideology, because military thinking and people were all through societies. There wasn't much room for people like Steve Jobs and other individualists in such thinking and unsurprisingly, few show up after their development years are spent in such repression. I developed an intense antipathy to dumb authoritarians as a result of such "esprit de corps" building. I learned that my main enemies were actually those who presumed to rule me in unreasoned dominance. They had better watch their backs. When I get a chance .... That's how Islam spread so well. They didn't simply kill all the men in the next lot to be taken over. They were over-running totalitarian kingdoms and they said to the serfs and slaves - "Join us and you will be free in Islam". [I think that's how they did it - a bit like the USA does now, with cash bonuses to those who sign up] I'd be tempted to take the offer too. It's not much fun being forced into "esprit de corps" and being taxed heavily. I will sign up if I can find a freedom-loving ideology to join. China is still very strong on such ideology. That's why they won't be achieving much any time soon. Islam adopts the same thinking - make them all comply with these arbitrary rules and they'll feel an esprit de corps. "Okay everyone, five times a day, towards Mecca, kneel, bow and submit. We will stand around the perimeter to make sure you all get it right". Anyone who can't figure out the rules will be "re-educated" as Mao's Maelstrom did for recalcitrants, and anyone else they fancied. The esprit de corps you are thinking of is actually Stockholm Syndrome. Its how primates think in alpha male dominance hierarchies. Patty Hearst became a well-trained exponent. Yes, you are right, an "esprit de corps" does get formed. Of sorts. Mqurice
