A more accurate version would be, “But when weighing those possible benefits against the costs of the Iraq intervention, there is simply no conceivable calculus by which Operation Iraqi Freedom can be judged to have been a successful or worthwhile policy, in the minds of most liberals who have no understanding of such matters, at all.” It is worth mentioning that the one modern-day liberal who can reasonably be said to possess "intelligence", is the now-late Chris Hitchens, who understood the rationale for the war and supported it--and, to his credit, didn't run from his opinion when the going got tough. Many, many other liberals supported it until it got ugly. In fact, the current grossly incompetent president is one of the few who didn't.
