The relationship between Sandisk and the other OEMs is somewhat murky. In this case, Sandisk and Hitachi has cross-licensed technologies with each other but I get the feelings that Sandisk gets more from Hitachi than vice-versa. The ATA technology belongs to Sandisk and Hitachi has to pay royalty. Hitachi's flash chip uses AND technology while Sandisk's flash chip uses NOR technology. I think Sandisk gets the legs up on everybody else by being able to design higher density flash chips and getting the technology patented before other companies can copy it. The technologies that Sandisk probably "steals" from other companies by exchanging licenses are probably in the manufacturing of the chip, notably 0.35 and 0.25 micron. Sandisk is fabless and may not have a lot of expertise in manufacturing.

Like Rambus (the company, not the stock yet), Sandisk is a Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) company.
