My house was appraised at 309,000 this past December when I refinanced. I'd be lucky to sell it for 275,000 if it were on the market. My taxes this past year were $1700 which is not bad. But because our city is in a financial mess and they have cut funding for our school systems this past year, they voted and passed by about 2% (something like 47% against versus 49%) to increase taxes for the schools. So this next year my property tax will go up about $300 for that. Then I find out that the Federal Government wants to tax us another $300.00 on our house to cover the "tax cuts" and also they are adding a new tax when you sell your home starting I believe next year to fund the "obama health care expenses". I believe this new tax will be about 2.5 percent or 3%. If someone knows the actual numbers feel free to correct what I have posted. Most americans are making less or have had pay freezes for the last 2 years. Our salaries are pretty much fixed. Everyone I know has had their health care insurance, home insurance and car insurance increase this year. Myself included. My point to
the other americans on this board is America is going down the tubes. We are facing hyperinflation with in the next 12-24 months. Our salaries are not going up. I would guess a large percent of people will lose their homes before this is all over. I have always been very frugal and have a large equity in my home, but the game in america is rigged. They will eventually get everything we own by hyperinflation. I believe they will tax everything away from us at some point.

how much is property tax in your neighborhood?

We pay 1%, so, about $5000.00 a year, real estate tax. Personal property tax (car tax) is another several hundred a year ( $4.57 per $100 of assessed value) . We also pay sales tax (typically 5%), and additional consumption tax on utilities.

We think that is a lot, but we also think we get a lot for our money.

Good roads, good libraries, good schools, good universities, good hospitals, good parks, good police, good fire and rescue, good court system, very low crime, clean water, clean air.

And, we can offset local taxes against federal taxes.

Some good things our taxes pay for: if somebody runs into a deer, call the county, and they will pick up the carcass within hours. If your next door neighbor develops hoarding behavior, call the county, and they will send a team to intervene. Animal shelters. Affordable housing. Elder care. Environmental protection. Human rights. Etc.
