We have two cats, two dogs.. Jesus our hamster recently died she (yes a she and she arrived so named so possibly she was Hispanic:o) lived to the ripe old age of two.. jogging one night and dead in her bed the next morning :o(

I have found (we have had seven cats) cats are not generally good for furniture with any fabric or leather component, and can be equally terrible on expensive or cheap carpeting.. They can be de-clawed which is not very nice for the cat no matter what you are told IMO but good for the furniture.... so it is an option if they will be indoor cats.. Ours go outside and we have foxes, raccoons, other cats and skunks aplenty.. so are not de-clawed..and so we trim claws often to protect the furniture etc...

Once trained not to evacuate in the house.. dogs are a lot easier on the house IMO if not large..but you need to walk them.. and you do not need to get a 'purse' dog :o) .. get a non shedding breed and even better..

I vote have Erita read about dogs also.. you can play with them a lot more than a cat..:o) I am biased... walking in both worlds.. but I agree with you that cats are definitely less maintenance especially if they are not destroyers of furniture.. out of seven cats we have owned ..one was easy on the furniture.. and he fetched like a dog.. :O)

oh and I find longhairs are less of a shedding problem... it doesn't float around as much...
