Paul

Tell your Catholic doctor friend to read this. It has always been the position of the Catholic church that life begins at conception. Your friend should discuss this with his priest the next time he goes to confession. He should define his position and ask if it is at odds with the teachings of the church.

his statement makes sense since the egg and sperm is not a living organism.

I'm not going to argue they are, but after they combine you obviously have a living organism, specifically a new member of the species homo sapiens. If I was trying to make the pro-choice argument I'd talk about the issue of whether or not you have a new "person", which might be defined as requiring thought, or legal recognition (a legal person, but then corporations are legal persons in a different sense) or some other ability or status. The no life argument is just silly. Even the sperm and the egg are alive.
