Steven Pinker (Harvard experimental psychologist), arguably one of the smartest people on the planet regarding the functioning of the human species just published a book " The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined And I would point out they had slaves in ancient Rome. No one had it better than today in all of history.
