All but two of our cats were strays we brought in.. the current two are shelter rescues. One we took in was pretty feral .. would eat in the kitchen and frantically scratch to get out of the house even in winter.. took a few months before he was comfy enough to stay.. after a year he was ours..

My dad does your cat cooker approach.. he is allergic and my mom feeds 5 strays.. so he built them a makeshift apartment building.. :O) Insulation and a nice small space out of wind under the home extension is quite warm..
