Last night as we walked around President's Park in the Ellipse just south of the White House, observing the National Christmas Tree, all the state trees, and all the other things (National Menorah, the creche, the Yule log, Santa's Workshop), it was more crowded than I had ever seen, perhaps because the weather was so nice, almost like spring.

In the crowd were people from all over the world, just glad to be there. Many of them stood in front of the fence by the White House, and had their photos taken, some stopping strangers to take their photos so they could all be in the photograph together, arms around each other, smiling.

Africans, Asians, Europeans, Latin Americans, North Americans, proud and pleased to have a photo of themselves standing in front of the White House. It was a joyful event.
