I think he took this decision because it is popular. US public opinion is really tough on major oil issues. Had the government being really tough on oil, the public would trust the regulators to keep oil in line and government could have approved the pipeline

The voting masses are easily manoeuvered by mass media. When there is an oil issue is a chance for government to plant into the voting masses the message it wants to convey. Message must be:
"We scare the hell out of big oil if it does not conform to our rules"

Election next year do not expect politicians to take any decision slightly unpopular.

Bob, has it occurred to you that there's nothing for Obama to gain from approving Keystone at this time? He's a political animal - like all of them. He's looking for votes. Business isn't going to back him no matter what he does. But the greens WILL either bolt or stay home - something he can't afford. The unions will stick with him because they have no where else to go.
He owes the unions - big time. The unions want Keystone. Keystone will get approved. If you've got some land in the proposed pathway of the pipeline, hang on to it. Christmas will come for you, albeit a bit late. Merry Christmas, HNY, and don't forget to take your blood pressure medicine before you decide to get worked up over President O.
