The difference is Bowman was born in Montreal and could get by in French. I don't agree with all of this nonsense either, but a lot of people aren't remembering that the Canadiens have always been Montreal's French team (the Maroons were the English team back when). Years ago 'canadien' used to signify french-Canadian, just as hab is short for 'habitant', as in "les habitants du pays" ... This thing goes back to the conquest of Quebec in 1759 (think, The Night They Dove Old Dixie Down), and has very powerful cultural/emotional currents.
