These shoes are a status symbol in the culture these kids live in. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear someone being assaulted to steal these shoes from a person wearing them. Air Jordans lead to riots, arrests and big profits on Craigslist . by Adam Walser WHAS11.com Posted on December 23, 2011 videowhas11.com (WHAS11) - Long lines, riots and even a shooting have been reported at stores nationwide, all over the hottest shoe on the market. We are talking about the latest Air Jordan sneakers, first made available at local stores before sunrise Friday. Deveroes sold their allotment of the shoes Friday morning, as did several other retailers in Louisville. That supply was wiped out in a matter of minutes, as people lined up hours before sunrise to purchase the hottest shoes in America this Christmas. “Just that white and that patent leather, looks so sexy,” said Cedric Lightsy, admiring his new pair of Air Jordan basketball shoes. Lightsy spent the predawn hours Friday in search of the hottest item on many people's Christmas list which is the Nike Air Jordan 11 Retro Concord. The shoes might look familiar. The original Air Jordan 11 Concord shoes debuted back in 1996, when Michael Jordan was at the height of his NBA career. “He just kept floating and floating and then he dunked on that thousand foot rim,” Lightsy said, recalling the commercial that made the shoes famous. To many people, the latest Air Jordans are a symbol that you have arrived. “They're gonna be the nicest shoes ever. When you go out for Christmas and go around your family, everybody wants to see what you got on, what you got for Christmas,” said Lightsy. The shoes retail for about $180, but they are selling for hundreds more on E-Bay. A riot to get the shoes broke out at an Indianapolis mall. A bare-knuckled brawl was caught on video in New York City, and shots rang out at a California mall. Here in Louisville, cops were called to Deveroes on Broadway when the crowd became angry after the store's supply of the shoes ran out. Lightsy bought one pair of Air Jordans at Jefferson Mall, where the crowd was anxious to get inside. “Broke the glass door. Pushed it in. People were just running everywhere. People falling. Cell phones flying, all that,” said Lightsy, describing the scene Friday morning. After that he managed to get a second pair. “I shot down to St. Matthews Mall and I lucked up and got a pair there and posted them on Craigslist. I sold one for $500 to this dude from Mt. Washington. Basically, I got my pair for free and $100,” said Lightsy. As for the pair he plans to wear to his Christmas gathering, “Anybody need another pair, I've definitely got them,” Lightsy said.
