Many years ago, in the late 80's, I came up with a joke, or at least I thought it was a joke - that the end of the USSR will be when Russia will decide to exit the union. And what d'ya know... that's exactly what happened, technically. Eventually, Yeltsin proclaimed Russia's "independence" from the USSR - and, basically, left Gorbachev as President of a nation which no longer existed.
