The good of the nation depends on it not being a reactionary socially freakish religious backwater- and the only party likely to fight (somewhat) against that, is the democratic party (the libertarians also tend to be somewhat less religio-cratic- but they are so backward in terms of social interdependency in a complex society I can't consider them as sensible).

So while in theory a republican might turn up that was, in your words, "good for the country"- it would need to be a socially liberal one, imo, and Huntsman isn't that. You probably don't realize this- but most people vote republican or democrat because they think that is good for the country. I don't know anyone who votes for something because it is bad for the country. Do you know anyone who does that? Do you know anyone who places their personal "bias" ahead of "what's best for the country"? That seems stupid to me. We have personal biases because we think our biases are good for the country- that's why we have them.

<<Personally, I don’t see the point in voting Democrat (or Republican), just because one is Democrat (or Republican), if that particular Democratic (or Republican) candidate isn’t going to cut it in terms of what will be best for the USA. >>

Let me give you a reason. Look at the votes in the congress. Time after time, right down party line. This is also true in most state legislatures and even the Supreme court!!!

So whatever the individual thinks makes little diffference. It is the party you belong to.

And, IMO, for the last 90 years the Democratic party has been the party of the common person, worker, downtrodden, poor, middle class, women, minorities and sensible polices from the environment to regulations.

While the Republican party is the party of the rich. Period.

So for this reason I never, ever, vote Republican.
