I agree with all of your reasons. I have several friends who are facing medical problems of their own + those of their parents and they just don't have the time or energy. I had cancer several yrs ago and after taking care of that, I have been very, very healthy. I hope your wife is now cancer free and that she is doing well.

Had to look downstream to see how your wife was doing...glad to see she's doing very well.... Like the way you put the "hunker down mode" .... we've done that too when one of the kids was having drug issues...have talked about some of that experience now, but for more than 25 years, it was just a battle, one thing right after another. Thank heavens I had my GIT friends so I could let off steam... He's doing much better now, but as they say, never look farther than a day at a time.
