I understand where you are coming from. I even agree with you to a point. Friendship is rooted in several factors. One of the problems with online friends is the lack of visual and verbal cues. This evens the playing field for people with incongruence problems between words, gesticulations and voice.

This lies in the root of my point. The less in person time people have the less strongly rooted is friendship. Perhaps the new fad of video chatting will restore some of the roots that are missing in social networking.
